Vanity number

A vanity number is a phone number chosen so its digits spell a word or form a memorable pattern on the keypad — 1-800-FLOWERS being the canonical example. The letters are a mnemonic; the underlying number is ordinary.

Definition

Vanity numbers exploit the letter groupings printed on a telephone keypad, where 2 carries ABC, 3 carries DEF, and so on. Dialling the letters dials the digits, so a memorable word doubles as a phone number. The technique long predates mobile phones and was built for a world of billboards, radio spots, and printed directories, where a customer had to retain a number long enough to dial it later.

They are acquired in two ways. Unclaimed patterns can sometimes be found in a provider's available inventory at ordinary cost. Desirable words on the 800 prefix are almost all long since taken and trade on a secondary market, where prices run from modest to extraordinary depending on the term's commercial value. Repeating-digit and sequential patterns are a related category, valued for rhythm rather than spelling.

Their usefulness has narrowed considerably. Click-to-call, saved contacts, and search mean fewer people transcribe a number from an advert and dial it from memory. Where vanity numbers still earn their cost is in high-recall broadcast contexts — radio, vehicle livery, billboards, television — and in categories where a single memorable number is itself part of the brand.

When this matters

Worth considering for businesses that advertise where a customer cannot tap a link: radio, outdoor, vehicle wraps, print. Not worth much for businesses acquiring customers online, where the number is a link rather than something to memorize, and where the acquisition cost is better spent on almost anything else.

FAQ

How do letters map to numbers on a phone?

The standard keypad assigns 2=ABC, 3=DEF, 4=GHI, 5=JKL, 6=MNO, 7=PQRS, 8=TUV, 9=WXYZ. The digits 0 and 1 carry no letters, which is why vanity words avoid them. Dialling the letters produces the underlying digits, so anyone can dial the number without knowing the word.

How much does a vanity number cost?

It depends entirely on whether the pattern is already claimed. An unclaimed one from ordinary inventory costs no more than any other number. A desirable dictionary word on the 800 prefix generally has an owner and changes hands on a secondary market, where prices span a very wide range according to the term's commercial value.

Are vanity numbers still worth it?

In broadcast advertising, sometimes — they exist to be remembered from a medium you cannot click. For online acquisition, rarely, because customers tap rather than memorize. Judge it against what the same acquisition budget would buy elsewhere.

Can a vanity number be local rather than toll-free?

Yes. Any number can spell something; toll-free is simply where the practice concentrated because national advertisers drove the demand. A local vanity number can work well for a business advertising within one metro.
